The SQL Server Desktop Engine (MSDE) is delivered along with Empirum. The MSDE is a fully functional MS SQL Server.

MSDE has no graphical user interface and has some more restrictions, which do not, however, affect the functionality of Empirum.

Like every database server, MSDE needs regular maintenance including a backup.

You can find the files _BACKUP.sql and _RESTORE.sql in the directory:

<DRIVE>\Empirum\Empirum DBUtil\Scripts\SQLServer\Custom.

  1. Start DBUtil and log on to your database.
  2. Select Actions > Execute SQL scripts..., and open the script _BACKUP.sql.

After the script has been executed, a correct backup of your database is available.

If you work with several location databases, run this script on every location database.

If you need to restore the database, run the _RESTORE.sql script for the database in question.

Do not perform an offline backup (stop service, copy database, start service) of the database.
This method does not permit restoring of the data!

Restoring the database (MSDE)

The following issues must be taken into consideration when restoring the MSDE location database:

  1. Replace the entry [%LOCATION%] in the file _RESTORE.sql with the actual location name.
  2. Start DBUtil and - DO NOT - log on to the location that is to be restored.
  3. Log on to another existing location, or create a new location, and perform the logon to that location.
  4. Execute the customized script for the actual location database.

If additional location databases are to be restored, please repeat the steps 1 through 4 for each location.

If a logon to a location takes place at a location with DBUtil, it cannot be restored, because DBUtil locks the respective location DB!
