Execute Native AI Function Activity in Workflow Studio
Table of Contents
Overview
The Execute AI Function activity lets you call a configured Native AI Function directly from a Workflow Studio (XAML) workflow. Administrators and workflow designers can pass input parameters to the AI Function and retrieve its generated results for use later in the same workflow, without migrating the workflow to Workflow Designer.
For example, a workflow can execute an AI Function that summarizes a ticket and return separate outputs for Overview, Communication, and Actions Taken. These results can then be used in subsequent workflow activities, such as updating records, creating changes, or triggering additional automation.
Key Capabilities
- Execute any configured Native AI Function directly within an existing Workflow Studio workflow.
- Pass workflow data and parameters to the AI Function as input arguments.
- Map individual AI-generated output values to workflow variables (structured output parameters).
- Access both the complete raw AI response and individually mapped output values.
- Reuse the result in subsequent activities and business logic within the same workflow.
Configuration
The activity is available in Workflow Studio as Execute AI Function, with the following properties:
| Property | Description |
|---|---|
| AI Function | The configured AI Function to execute. |
| Input Arguments | The input parameters passed to the selected AI Function. |
| Display Name | A custom name for the activity within the workflow. |
| Output Arguments | Maps structured AI Function output parameters to workflow variables. |
| Raw response content | Stores the complete raw response returned by the AI Function. |
| Response content | Stores the processed AI response for further use in the workflow. |
Structured Output Arguments
When an AI Function provides multiple output parameters, you can map each one to a separate workflow variable. For example, a ticket summarization AI Function can return the following:
| Output Argument | Type | Example Workflow Variable |
|---|---|---|
| Overview | String | Param1 |
| Communication | String | Param2 |
| ActionsTaken | String | Param3 |
These variables can be reused in subsequent workflow activities, enabling further processing of individual AI-generated results.
Prerequisites
- Supported in Workflow Studio (XAML-based workflows).
Existing Workflow Studio workflows can be extended with this activity without migrating them to Workflow Designer.
