The computers and handhelds existing in your network are fully inventoried with Empirum Inventory. Additionally, other devices existing in your company ("Unmanaged Devices") can be created.

After the installation, an Empirum package is stored in the structure of Empirum (Drive:\Empirum\Configurator\Packages\matrix42\Inventory\10.0\Install\Setup.inf). This package has to be distributed to all client computers, or a corresponding call has to be entered in the login script.

Via the file (Drive:\Empirum\Configurator\User\EmpInv.exe), which is executed on the client computer (startup, RUN line, login script), the inventory information is transferred to a shared permission (EmpInv$) on the Empirum server. From there, the information is scanned into the database by the inventory service (EmpInvSvc.exe).

The Inventory tab allows you to create individual views of the inventory information.

  1. For modifying or creating a new view for computers, select menu Tools > Properties.
You get to the Properties dialog.

The column definition is now applied to the selected filter.

Identify if an End Device Already Exists in the Database

If an end device like a computer already exists in the database, it should be updated and added to the database otherwise. The following list provides the information how and in which order different end devices are checked for existence.

Devices

  1. There already is a device with the provided MAC address.
  2. There already is a device with the provided IP address.

Handhelds

  1. There already is a client with a DeviceID equal to the handheld's device name.
  2. There already is a client with a name equal to the handheld's device name.

Clients/Computers

  1. There already is a client with a name and domain equal to the provided data.
  2. If the inventory file has a section "InvTempData" it will be checked if the contained LastComputerName and LastDomain match to any client in the database. If so, the existing client will be updated to the new information. Otherwise, the client will be treated as new.

The "InvTempData" section is filled only if the name of the computer or the connected domain has changed since the last inventory. Both values are stored in the registry under HKLM\SOFTWARE\Matrix42\EmpInventory during a run.
